           Creating an efficient design

The Perfect Structure™ app presented by the BlackSea Labs has a clean and simple UI. It greatly enhances user input for the dimensions,
rebar amount, load data, etc. Afterwards you will be directed to the results screen where you can see how your design compares to the selected design code. If the results err on the side of caution there is a probability that the RC
member’s design has room for improvement.

In this case the thing to do is redoing the calculation with lesser dimension, rebar area or a different section geometry. Perfect Structure will assist you during these steps. If you don’t want to bother entering rebar area yourselves, then just select “calculate rebar amount” option.

Some concepts for the design of a reinforced concrete colum

Gravity loadsOne of the most important loads acting on an RC structure is its own weight which is called the gravity loads. Gravity loads are transferred by the columns and sheer walls to the foundation.

Interaction diagram The interaction diagram, also called the M-N diagram depicts the envelope of the ultimate capacity of a RC column according to its maximum moment capacity vs maximum vertical load bearing capacity. These two important parameters occupy the X and Y axes of the 2D chart (see the graphic on the first page).

Some key takeaways from the graphic are:
– the balanced case shown with Mb, Nb symbols
where the ultimate strain of the concrete fiber on
compression side corresponds with the strain at
yield stress of rebar steel on the tension side.

Correct vs erred result

On the interaction diagram please observe the check and cross signs. The check sign is in green color, whereas the cross is in red.
A given N, M load couple shall be compared with the interaction diagram. If the couple fall into the borders of the diagram its highly probable that your design is correct. If it falls outside the border of the diagram its highly likely that your column will fail in one of the modes described earlier. Again, the Perfect Structure will do the necessary checks and inform you promptly.
